This handbook is written to strengthen peace education within the framework of the Nigeria National Civic Education Curriculum. It responds to Nigeria’s urgent need for unity, tolerance, responsible citizenship, and peaceful coexistence in a society richly blessed with diversity.
Nigeria is a multi-ethnic, multi-religious, and multicultural nation with over 250 ethnic groups and multiple faith traditions. While this diversity is a strength, it also requires deliberate effort to maintain harmony. Sustaining peace in such a complex society demands early, consistent, and structured education that instills national values in young people. Peace cannot be achieved only through security measures or political agreements; it must be cultivated in classrooms, homes, and communities.
This handbook positions children and youth not merely as beneficiaries of peace but as active contributors to national stability and development. When young people understand their civic duties, respect differences, and practice non-violence, they become pillars of national unity. Peace education therefore becomes both a moral responsibility and a national investment.
